Residency Status
Residency Status For
Foreigners Live & Work Legally in Costa Rica
Are you thinking about a move to Costa Rica, to buy Real Estate and maybe working here?
The government of Costa Rica offers different types of legal residency options, and here they are high-lighted.
PENSIONADO:Basic financial requirements:
The applicant needs to produce proof that he/she is entitled to a monthly pension income with a minimum of US $600.00, and that this pension is guaranteed for their lifetime. This does not have to be a social security pension. It can be a disability pension, or one generated from past employment.
This status does NOT allow you to work in Costa Rica.
RENTISTA:Basic financial requirements:
The applicant needs to:
a.) deposit in a bank in Costa Rica US $60,000 per adult and US $30,000 per child. For example, a family consisting of applicant, spouse and 2 children, would require a deposit of US $180,000.
or.
b.) provide a guarantee from an oversees financial institution that a minimum of US $1,000 per adult and US $500 per child in the form of interest earned monthly will be provided to applicant for a minimum of 5 years. At the end of this 5-year period, this guarantee will need to be renewed.
This status does NOT allow you to work in Costa Rica.
RESIDENT INVESTOR: (Your Best Choice).
Basic financial requirement.:
A minimum investment in the amount of either US $50,000, US $100,000 or US $200,000, depending on the type of investment being made. An example is tourism. . .a project requires a minimum investment of US $50,000, but the investment has to be approved. In reality, MINAE and the Costa Rican Immigration Department know that with today's costs of land and infrastructure, plans and development costs, the figure is not realistic. Thus, the project (and your residency request) would have little chance of approval.
This is the only status that allow you to work in Costa Rica.
