Is Costa Rica Safe?

Costa Rica is one of the safest Central American countries to visit. One of the country’s most important sources of income is tourism, so the country is motivated to keep it safe for travelers. However, just like traveling to any other country, there are always certain risks to be aware of. Follow these safety tips to make sure your vacation is free of unnecessary danger: 

Costa Rica Safety Tips

1. Don’t carry passports, large amounts of cash or valuables. Leave passports and valuables in hotel safes whenever possible. 
2. Watch for pick pockets. Petty theft is common in Costa Rica so don’t keep valuables in easy-to-reach places like back pockets.
3. Never leave valuables unattended. Never leave your things unsupervised, especially on the beach or on public buses. 
4. Listen to expert guides. When going on hikes or tours, always follow the advice of your tour guide to avoid accidents or getting lost. 
5. Don’t stop on the side of the road. If you get a flat tire while driving, try and reach a service station or public place and change the tire on your own.
6. Don’t walk alone at night. 
7. Take official taxis or Ubers. Official taxis are red with a yellow triangle on the side. 
8. Travel in pairs or groups. Especially if you are a woman. 
9. Talk to your hotel about safe and dangerous spots in the area. This includes bars, swimming spots, hiking trails and tour companies.  
10. Travel with a reputable travel agency. Check certifications and customer reviews of local travel agencies and book your hotels with them. My Costa Rica is certified by the Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) and only works with the safest hotels, tour companies and drivers we have personally reviewed.
