Visiting Tambor, Costa Rica
The Nicoya Peninsula is full of pretty little beach towns, all with the same laid-back vibes and amazing beaches. Surrounded by luscious greenery with a beautiful long sandy beach, Playa Tambor Costa Rica is no different. Tambor is quiet fishing village that is growing in popularity as a vacation destination in Costa Rica. Chosen as the location for the Fox TV series Temptation Island 2, Playa Tambor is actually one of the more developed towns in the areas with more places to stay and explore. It is the ideal base to stay whilst you check out the area. Renowned for its breathtaking beaches with aquamarine waters, Playa Tambor is the perfect place to a peaceful getaway. The beach lies in Ballena or Whale Bay, taking its name from the migration of whales.

Swimming
Well protected from ocean swells by two rocky platforms to the north and south, Playa Tambor is excellent for a relaxing swim in the ocean. Thanks to the low tide, the large, flat beach is also ideal for beach games like soccer or volleyball before you cool off in the refreshing waters.
Walks on the beach
A popular activity in Tambor is to walk the 4-kilometer long path that goes from the southern pier in the town to Cocalitos beach. It’s a great way to exercise and admire the natural beauty of Tambor. You’re rewarded at the end of your walk by the El Choro waterfall, which falls directly into the sea.
Sport Fishing
If you’re interested in fishing, Tambor is the perfect location for an unforgettable experience. You can hire a professional operator to take you hop into traditional fishing boat called a “panga” for a more affordable fishing tour.
Horseback Riding
Horseback riding in Tambor is quite popular. There are guided tours that take you through the Tambor hills, where you can see Montezuma. Some will guide you through rivers and waterfalls. It’s a great way to see some howler monkeys!
Golfing
Keen golfers will enjoy the several golf courses in the area. The Hotel Tango Mar in Tambor has its own golf course.
If you want to go snorkeling or scuba diving, go to Tortuga Island for the best diving in the Nicoya Peninsula. The waters are incredibly clear so you’ll get some of the best marine life views in Costa Rica! The beaches are also worth a visit. White sand, palm trees and coconuts, what more could you ask for!
Curu Wildlife Refuge
The Curu Wildlife Reserve is 1,496 hectares of rivers, estuaries, mangroves, rivers and hundreds of tropical bird species like scarlet macaws. You can spend all day bird watching. You might also spot white faced capuchin monkeys, howler monkeys and spider monkeys!
Getting There
Closest International Airport: Juan Santamaria (SJO)
Given that Playa Tambor has its own domestic airport serving the entire area, it makes sense to fly directly from San Jose’s international airport. However, if you fancy an adventure, or are traveling on more of a budget then you can head to Puntarenas. You can catch the ferry to Paquera and drive the remaining distance to Playa Tambor. The roads may not be perfectly smooth, but the scenery en route along the coast more than makes up the road itself.
Where to Stay
The great thing about staying in Playa Tambor Costa Rica is the diversity. For the area, it has many restaurants and hotels to enjoy. You can be in the middle of the rainforest in a national park one minute and then be soaking up the sun on a fabulously luxurious private beach the next. Costa Rica’s first all inclusive resort, the Barcelo Playa Tambor Beach Resort is a fantastic place to spend some time. It’s a beautiful hotel to stay without guests having to go over budget. Hotel Tango Mar is also highly attractive for its location on its own private beach and has its own golf course if you fancy a game.
