Visiting Playa Avellanas
The little town of Playa Avellanas in Guanacaste consists mainly of hotels and cabins, a few restaurants and villas. It is a wonderful place to escape the city and find peace and relaxation. A gorgeous setting and the spectacle of beautiful sunsets over and a top destination for surfers.
Surfing and water sports
A surfers’ beach by excellence, Avellanas is a beautifully relaxing destination. It is serene and calm, and easy to access. Playa Avellanas has over eight surf breaks along its shore, and it is not a place for novices. To get maximum fun, it is best to surf during high tide when the waves form perfect tubes.
If you are a beginner surfer and don’t quite feel up to a beach like Avellanas yet, head to Tamarindo. Tamarindo is famous for its beginner surfing lessons and has amazing schools such as the Witch’s Rock Surf Camp.
Playa Avellanas is one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches – in tune and harmony with the beautiful natural surroundings, and offering great surf with incredible flora and fauna. While you are there, look out for Lola, the pig that has lived there for as long as everyone remembers and that seem to rather enjoy swimming and taking a stroll on the beach. Take long walks along the mighty Pacific Ocean and do not miss the spectacular sunsets. Other animals you might spot from the beach include birds and monkeys like the famous Howler Monkeys.
Beach tours and activities
Avellanas is perfect for long strolls on the beach and horseback riding. Come and explore the surrounding beaches like Playa Langosta and Playa Negra and visit the National Parks Guanacaste is so famous for. Do not miss a tour of the Las Baulas National Park at Playa Grande. Here you might spot the giant Leatherback Turtles and the Olive Ridley Turtles who visit the beaches during nesting season.
Visit from December to March for the beach: This is the Costa Rica dry season and the perfect time for the traveler who yearns for long, sunny days. Don’t forget the sunblock!
Visit from August to December for the turtles: If you want the biggest chance to spot turtles laying their eggs, the rainy season is actually the best season to come. Maybe you will even see the famous Las Baulas! Also know that Guanacaste has the least amount of rainfall in the whole country.
Explore the surrounding area: Beach hop! Visit other famous Guanacaste beaches and if you can, even some national parks like Rincon de la Vieja or Santa Rosa.
Playa Avellanas is located just south of Tamarindo at about 86 kilometers from the international airport of Liberia. You can rent a car from the airport or even get there by shuttle. Both shared and private shuttles will be available to you. If you want, you can even take advantage of the domestic airport in Tamarindo and go only a couple of kilometers further south to Playa Avellanas.
The best restaurant Playa Avellanas is known for, is Lola’s. here you can enjoy local and Caribbean dished as well as seafood and international cuisine. Something for everyone! If you go a bit further to the beach of Playa Negra, you can visit Villa Deveena famous for its seafood and French cuisine.

Playa Avellanas has a choice of some of Costa Rica’s best hotels. The fabulous JW Marriott Hotel & Resort Costa Rica is located just north of Playa Avellanas on Playa Mansita.
