Trogon Lodge, on a river in the Savegre Valley
Trogon Lodge sits on a family farm in the Savegre Valley at San Gerardo de Dota, with a clear, boulder-strewn river running through the property and cloud forest on the slopes above. The wood cabins are set in gardens of roses, calla lilies and geraniums.
It is one of our team's favourites in the valley, for birders, for couples and for families who want the mountains without fuss.
Why we choose it
- Quetzal country. The lodge runs guided tours into the forests where the resplendent quetzal lives, along with trogons and the valley's hummingbirds.
- A room for two above it all. The single Superior room sits on its own up a flight of steps, with a balcony over the valley and the lodge and its own jacuzzi.
- Built around the river. The restaurant and gardens face the river, so meals come with the sound of the water.
Rooms and views
The standard rooms are in wooden cabins, two rooms to a cabin, with large windows onto the gardens and a shared veranda. Family rooms have two queen beds and sleep two adults with two children. Nights are cold at this altitude, which is why the rooms have heaters and extra blankets.
The Superior room is for adults only: two guests, no children, reached by steps, with the widest view on the property. It cannot be booked online, so ask us and we will check it for you.
On the property
Meals are at Restaurant El Quetzal, with rustic tables and a terrace over the river. The lobby has a fireplace for the evenings. The lodge arranges guided tours, with a minimum of two people, and from here you can hike to waterfalls or ride on horseback into the hills.
Children are welcome in the standard rooms: up to age 4 they stay at no extra cost sharing with two adults, and from 5 to 11 there is a breakfast charge. Pets are not allowed.
Location and getting there
Trogon Lodge is 87 km from San José. The grounds are steep, so if anyone in your group has trouble with stairs, tell us and we will ask for a room near the main building. Check-in is from 14:00. Read more about San Gerardo de Dota.
