Claro de Luna is a small, friendly hotel in Santa Elena, the town at the heart of Monteverde, close to its restaurants, pharmacies and supermarkets. Even so, it is calm: the garden draws hummingbirds, and from the hotel you can see the cloud forest and, on a clear day, the Gulf of Nicoya.

The Deluxe Room with Jacuzzi is the one we suggest for couples. The Deluxe Room is a comfortable, simpler choice, and the House Claro de Luna gives a family or a group a home of its own.

The rooms have no TV, which most guests are glad of after a day in the forest.

On the property

Breakfast is traditional Costa Rican, made with help from the hotel's organic garden. There is secured parking, laundry service and a front desk that books tours.

The front porch is a good place for a sunset drink. On misty, windy afternoons, which are common up here, rainbows often appear over the valley before night falls, and on dry days the garden is busy with birds.

Location and getting there

Claro de Luna is in Santa Elena, Monteverde, near the town's restaurants and shops. Liberia airport is about 2.5 hours away by road. From here we arrange the cloud forest reserves with a naturalist, canopy zip lines, hanging bridges over the treetops or a birding walk in search of the quetzal, with a driver to collect you.
