Trapp Family Lodge is a small, European-style lodge set in the Monteverde Cloud Forest, with forest on every side of the grounds rather than the shops and traffic of the town. It suits couples, families and friends who want a calm, warm place to come back to after a day out in the cloud forest, and it works just as well for a first visit to Monteverde as for a return trip.

The feeling here is quiet. Mornings start with mist moving through the trees, and evenings are for dinner and an early night before the next walk.

• Trails into the forest. Trails run from the lodge toward the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, so a morning walk starts at your door instead of with a drive to the trailhead.
• Birds from the grounds. The lodge has a wide view over the forest, and the birding starts on the property, before breakfast, with a coffee in hand.
• A quiet base in a busy area. Monteverde can feel full in the high season. Here the forest is the neighbour, so the nights are dark and calm, which is why we like it for couples and families alike.

Rooms and views

The rooms are spacious and simple, in a European mountain style, with a king or queen bed and a private bathroom with hot water. Each room has a phone, a safe box and a hair dryer.

The point of the room is rest: thick forest outside, quiet inside, and the sound of the trees rather than the road.

On the property

The lodge has its own restaurant and bar, where local cooks make traditional Costa Rican meals. After a long walk in the reserve it is a relief not to have to go back into town for dinner, especially on a misty evening.

The grounds are open and green, with room to sit outside and watch for birds. Trapp Family Lodge is one of our team's favourites in Monteverde, because it puts you in the forest without giving up a warm room and a good meal.

Location and getting there

The lodge is in Monteverde, in the mountains of the Northern Zone, about 2.5 hours by road from Liberia airport. Most of our clients reach it with a private driver, often combining it with the Arenal Volcano before or after.

From the lodge, the trails and the reserve are close, and we can arrange guided walks, hanging bridges, zip lining and night tours around Monteverde.
