Bosque del Cabo sits on the cliffs of Cabo Matapalo, about 500 feet above the point where the Golfo Dulce meets the Pacific, inside a forest reserve of more than 750 acres. A mile-long driveway through the trees brings you in. It is a lodge for naturalists, hikers and couples who want the Osa at its wildest, with an ocean view from the porch.

• The ocean from a thatched bungalow. The bungalows sit along the bluff with views of the Pacific, so the sunset over the water comes straight to your porch.
• A huge private forest. The reserve covers more than 750 acres of rainforest, with trails you can walk on your own or with a guide.
• Adventure on the property. A 300-foot suspension bridge crosses a gorge, and there is a tree platform and a zip line in the canopy.

Rooms and views

The heart of the lodge is the thatched bungalows looking out to the ocean, with private bathrooms, outdoor garden showers and screened windows. For families and small groups there are two rental houses: Casa Blanca, with 2 bedrooms and a Pacific Ocean view, and Casa Miramar, with 3 bedrooms and a sunset view.

Set back among the plants are the tropical garden units, Casa Teca, Cabina La Paz and Cabina Almendra, for guests who prefer the sound of the forest to the sound of the surf.

On the property

The restaurant runs on solar power, and El Palenque is the thatched rancho bar. There is a pool, a wildlife pond, and massage, spa treatments and yoga. Children are welcome, but the lodge is honest that it is not child proofed, the pool has no lifeguard and the nearest clinic is about one hour away, so we suggest it for families with older, careful kids.

Location and getting there

Cabo Matapalo is the southern tip of the Osa Peninsula, where the Golfo Dulce opens to the Pacific, with Corcovado National Park to the west. From the lodge we arrange whale and dolphin watching, kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, surfing and horseback riding, and the private transfer from Puerto Jiménez.
