Luna Lodge sits on a forested hillside above Carate, near Corcovado National Park, at the remote southern end of the Osa Peninsula. Rooms and views

All four room types have canopy views. The Honeymoon Bungalow is for 2 adults, and the Bungalows take up to 4 adults, with private bathrooms and space to spread out. The Hacienda Style Rooms sleep 2 adults and 1 child, the only rooms that list a child, so they are the family choice.

The Safari Tents, for 2 adults, are the closest you can sleep to the forest while keeping a proper bed, and waking up in one to the howler monkeys is the reason people book them.

On the property

Three meals are served each day in the main lodge, a building of natural wood with a high vaulted ceiling, which also holds the reception and a small gift shop. The kitchen picks vegetables and herbs from the organic garden on site. There is a natural rock pool in the tropical garden just off the main rancho, and the spa and yoga platform make the lodge a natural home for organised retreats.

Location and getting there

Getting here is part of the trip. The drive from Puerto Jiménez takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, down the coast to where the road ends and then up a river gorge with water crossings, so a four-wheel-drive is needed and we arrange the transfer with a driver who knows the road.
