Visiting Carate Costa Rica
Playa Carate Costa Rica is a secluded beach located near the most Southern Pacific of the Osa Peninsula in the province of Puntarenas. The Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica is one of the last areas explored by local ranchers and farmers during the agricultural expansion years. Half of Osa was practically left untouched, and the natural flora and fauna and wildlife remains protected mainly through Corcovado National Park and other legally protected areas. Carate is really close to the La Leona Ranger Station on the east side of Corcovado National Park. It’s about 50 kilometers south of Drake Bay. Carate Beach is surrounded by a lush jungle full of tropical wildlife. It’s sparsely populated, making a perfect place for visitors looking to escape the crowds and get off the beaten bath.
Highlights
Corcovado National Park is the most biologically intense place on Earth. It’s the only place in Costa Rica to have all four local monkey species in one tree. You’ll also find hundreds of bird and reptile species, the tallest trees in the world, peccaries and tapirs!
Sea Turtles
Eco-tourists will love watching sea turtles come to shore to nest on Carate beach. Leatherbacks, Green Sea, Pacific Ridley and Hawskbill sea turtles are all regular visitors to the Osa Peninsula.
Tips
Visit Between January and April:
The dry season in the Osa Peninsula is mainly between January and April. The roads are not as safe during the rainy season (May-November) and camping is not as enjoyable.
Come prepared:
Carate is extremely secluded. You won’t find a Walmart or McDonald’s and you might have a hard time finding a gas station. Make you sure you fill up a rental car when ever you get the chance and come prepared with lots of food and water.
Fill the gas tank early and often:
You won’t find a lot of gas stations on your way or near Carate. If you do drive there, be sure to go on a full tank and fill it up every chance you get.
