Secrets Papagayo, on its own cove on Papagayo Bay

Secrets Papagayo is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort on a black volcanic sand beach on Papagayo Bay, in Guanacaste, with its rooms and bungalows set across the hillside. It suits couples, honeymooners and adult friends who want a beach, a spa and someone else taking care of the details, close to Liberia airport.

The cove is quiet and sheltered, and from the hillside the views run across the bay and over the tropical gardens.

Why we choose it

• Adults only. No children, so the pools, restaurants and beach stay calm from morning to night.
• Bungalow suites on the hill. The bungalow suites sit among the gardens, some facing the ocean or right on the oceanfront, which gives couples more privacy than a tower block.
• A honeymoon favourite. It is one of our team's favourites for honeymoons on this coast: the volcanic sand cove, the spa and an oceanfront suite with its own plunge pool.

Rooms and views

The Deluxe Ocean View King rooms have a balcony looking out to the sea, and the Tropical View King rooms face the gardens. The Bungalow Suites come with a king or two doubles and a tropical view.

The Preferred Club adds more: Bungalow Suites with ocean or oceanfront views, and the Junior Suite King Oceanfront, which has its own plunge pool. Rooms have a TV, a phone, a safe and a hair dryer.

On the property

There is a spa, pools and a Jacuzzi, a beach club on the cove, several restaurants, tennis courts and a shop. The beach is calm enough for snorkeling and kayaking, and the hillside trails make a good early walk.

Preferred Club guests have extra services and their own lounge, a quieter corner of the resort.

Location and getting there

Secrets Papagayo is on Papagayo Bay, near Playa Panamá, in Guanacaste, a short transfer from Liberia airport.

From here we can arrange sport fishing, a catamaran on the bay, a canopy tour, or a day at Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, and we usually pair it with Arenal for a classic forest and beach trip.
