Tenorio Lodge, between the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes

Tenorio Lodge sits at 1,640 ft between the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes, a few km south of Bijagua village and close to Rio Celeste. The bungalows face the Tenorio volcano across gardens of heliconias and fruit trees. It suits couples and nature lovers who want a quiet base for the blue river and the forest around it.

Why we choose it

• The volcano from your window. Every bungalow has large windows looking at the Tenorio volcano, and the view changes with the clouds all day.
• Close to Rio Celeste. It is one of the nearest comfortable bases for the hike to the blue waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park.
• Gardens made for birders. Trails wind through heliconias and past two natural ponds on 17 acres, and birds come right up to the terrace.

Rooms and views

The rooms are bungalows of 45 m2, each with either one king bed plus a sofa or two queen beds, and all with a view of the Tenorio volcano. The style is rustic and simple, with big windows for the light and the scenery.

The bungalows were built with local materials by local workers, and accessible rooms are available.

On the property

The main lodge holds the restaurant, the bar and a souvenir shop with handmade local products. The terrace looks straight at the volcano, a good spot for coffee in the morning. The restaurant cooks with produce from farms nearby. At El Ranchito there are two jacuzzis in red cedar, set in the heliconia garden, where hummingbirds keep you company in the late afternoon.

Location and getting there

The lodge is a few km south of Bijagua, between the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes, near the entrance to Rio Celeste. From here we can arrange the Rio Celeste hike, a boat trip in the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, Palo Verde National Park, horseback riding and bird watching tours.
