Tocú Tent Camp, a tented camp on the wetlands of Hacienda Caño Negro near Los Chiles

Tocú is a luxury tented camp in the heart of Hacienda Caño Negro, a ranch of 175 hectares on the Río Frío in the far north of Costa Rica, near Los Chiles. The tents stand in a ring around the pool with the wetlands beyond, and the camp belongs to the Hamilton Leisure group, the people behind Tilajari near Arenal. It suits travellers who want the birds of Caño Negro from a king bed with a tub in the garden, and it takes children.

Why we choose it

  • Caño Negro from inside the ranch. Guests get exclusive access to the private trails of the Hacienda, with its forest and about 15 hectares of preserved wetlands along the Río Frío, plus guided tours of the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge itself.
  • A tent that is really a suite. Over 50 m2, a king bed plus a queen-size nest bed, double sinks, and a private back garden with an outdoor tub, a rainforest shower and a hammock.
  • Evenings by the fire. The Kapi Forest Lounge and its fire pits look out over the wetlands, with cocktails built on Costa Rican flavours.

Rooms and views

There is one kind of tent, the Luxury Tent, designed and built in Costa Rica by local artisans: over 50 m2, a king-size bed and a queen-size nest bed, a sofa and a bathroom with double sinks. The private front terrace looks over the tropical gardens, and the private back garden holds the outdoor tub, the rainforest shower and a nest hammock.

On the property

The Kura Wetlands Restaurant cooks Costa Rican food from fresh local ingredients in an open-sided room of wood and clay, with panoramic views of the wetlands. The Kapi Forest Lounge is the social heart of the camp, with fire pits facing the Río Frío. The main building has an air-conditioned lounge room upstairs for a film or a private meeting. The pool sits in the middle of the ring of tents.

Days here are about water and birds: guided tours of the refuge and the Hacienda's private forest with local experts, birdwatching and photography outings at dawn and dusk into private parts of the ranch, and workshops on how the Hacienda farms and ranches with low impact. The estate replants native trees.

Location and getting there

The camp is in Caño Negro, Alajuela, inside the Hacienda on the Río Frío. It pairs well with Arenal or the Río Celeste on the same trip, and we arrange the private transfer from either airport. Read more about Caño Negro.
