La Paloma Lodge near Drake Bay in Costa Rica is a wilderness retreat and a green oasis. Completely secluded, the nearest town is 25 minutes walking through lowland jungles and rivers. Paloma’s location is engulfed by generous gardens, wildlife, nature, and luxury in perfect harmony.
La Paloma Lodge gives the option of rooms, ranchos and sunset ranches; each one has hardwood floors, orthopedic beds, and incredible views. Open rooms enhance the jungle experience and increase air circulation with help from ceiling fans. Their single and two story open ranchos are apt for groups or large families, the sunset ranches facing Caño Island are beautiful. La Paloma Lodge open air accommodations have porches and hammocks; they also come with an early morning tray of coffee knocking on your door.
Breakfast is served from 5:30 in the morning to 8:30 am and meals are served in a communal setting; their breakfast pineapple is delicious. The beach near La Paloma Lodge is desolate and gorgeous; its waters are usually calm and ideal for swimming. Local English speaking guides will lend you their keen vision and point out wildlife hiding behind the flora. The jungle walk from Paloma Lodge to Drake Bay is a 25-minute hike. Other hikes include a waterfall, river crocodiles, a night hike and a ladybug tour. Guests can visit mangroves on kayaks or horseback riding along the beach to great snorkeling spots. Off land, Paloma Lodge patrons can take a boat to Caño Island for awesome scuba diving, hikes, whales, and dolphins. Go sports fishing and catch sailfish, tuna, wahoo, dorado, and snappers.
Visitors to La Paloma Lodge are also visitors to one of Costa Rica’s most secluded natural wilderness areas. Seclusion has costs and limitations you should know about before arriving at Paloma Lodge. La Paloma Lodge lacks AC, phones or an extensive wine list, but their margaritas make up for the latter.
Upper-level floors have better air circulation and fewer bugs. Open air bathrooms may seem a bit odd for some; others will never enjoy showering indoors again. Keep your toothbrush away from windows thus away from monkeys. La Paloma Lodge has rocky trails and plenty of stairs to climb to get to your Rancho, the beach and the dining area. Bring your flashlight and bug spray; don’t forget to turn your lights off before leaving for dinner. Dining usually consists of two options; however, their food is fresh and tasty. Finally, before spending money on a scuba diving expedition, ask your guide about visibility. This is nature at its natural best!
Caño Island contains a great abundance of marine wildlife offering the perfect location for your next snorkeling adventure. Explore the waters and spot moray eels, tuna, parrotfish, puffers, and many more colorful creatures! Perhaps you will even get to see sea turtles, rays and dolphins! Combine watching aquatic wildlife with a touch of history and dive to the pre-Colombian artifacts offering a glimpse of Costa Rica’s indigenous past.

Considered to be one of the wonders of the world, Corcovado holds 13 major ecosystems, beach habitats, and coastal marine diversity. The abundance of flora and fauna overcomes everybody! Baird’s tapirs, jaguars, pumas, macaws, toucans, squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, spider monkeys, capuchin monkeys, two-toed and three-toed sloths, agoutis, giant anteaters, coatimundis, peccaries (wild pigs), hummingbirds, black hawks, spectacled owls, 4 species of turtles (green, Ridley, hawksbill and leatherback), crocodiles, snakes, lizards, golden-orb spiders, numerous types of butterflies, and various insects are calling Corcovado their home and the list goes on!
Be prepared for a wet landing at San Pedrillo ranger station. The trails snake along pristine beaches into a deep rainforest. Your guide will lead you to magnificent waterfalls and swimming holes! Usually, two hikes separated by a picnic lunch break are part of this tour. The first one in the morning is approximately three and half hours long. Pointing out various wildlife to you, your guide will explain to you the different habitats and answer all your questions. The afternoon hike is normally a bit shorter featuring an ascent to a waterfall, where you will be able to take a refreshing swim!
During the entire tour, please take CAUTION while staying on the trails and listening to your guides! Always be aware of your surroundings! It is not recommended to go behind the waterfall.
