Visiting the Masaya volcano
Masaya, a picturesque city filled with heritage, folklore, and natural destinations, is mainly visited for its market and of course, the Masaya volcano. This town is a cultural destination where you can see traditional dance, music and shop for you locally crafted souvenirs. Located only 19km from Managua and a short 16km from Granada, you can arrange a tour to Masaya from both of these cities.

Masaya Volcano
The two major natural destinations near Masaya are the Masaya Lagoon also the Masaya Volcano National Park. The latter is a favorite tourist spot and has a small museum and a tourist information center. Masaya is still an active volcano and lava is visible in one of the volcano’s crater. The night tours are the best ones available. You will leave in the afternoon and stop off at the museum to learn all about the volcano’s history. Then, you will be taken to the volcano where you can see the magma bubbling.
Artisan Market
The Mercado Artesanias, or Artisan Market, offers visitors the chance to walk through booths showcasing crafts made by Nicaraguans. The market is located in a distinctive 1900s building near the center of the city. This market displays the very heart of Nicaraguan handicrafts and is a favorite tourist spot. Every Thursday night there are traditional Nicaraguan dances presented near the market, so this would be a great time to visit.
Tips
Visit between December and May: This is the dry season and the best chance you will get for long, sunny days.
Visit Masaya in a day trip: While it is possible to stay here, the Masaya volcano is a popular day trip and very easy to arrange from either Managua or Granada.
